Newcastle Coal Creek Golf Course

Landscape Architecture

  Client: International Land Group
Project Size: 270 Acres
September 1991
The project consisted of an 18-hole public golf course, practice putting greens and range, clubhouse facilities which included a pro-shop, restaurant, banquet room, locker room and mechanical exercise room. The additional recreational features are sport courts, tennis courts, trail linkage system, swimming pool and spa area.

The golf course design team for the Conditional Use Permit included Robert Trent Jones, Jr., Golf Course Architect; Mithun Partners, Clubhouse Architects; Parametrix, Engineering; RZA-AGRA, Geo-tech; and R.W. Thorpe & Associates, Landscape Architects.

The location of the golf course is central to the Seattle area with convenient access to north/south and east/west corridors. The site is oriented with a dramatic view to the west which includes Bellevue and Lake Washington beyond.

The dramatic land forms include elevation changes of up to 300' throughout the course. Two large water features are also incorporated into the design.

Site design and the selection of plant materials was made more challenging because the site was used as a landfill for construction debris and old coal mining seams run underground. These aspects were mitigated by a landfill closure plan and the golf course was proposed as a final revegetation and reclamation of the site.

The landscape design included the entry layout, signage and vegetation, the streetscape along the access drive, parking lot planting and layout, landscape treatment of the clubhouse complex, and plantings within the Par 72, 7,000 yard course.
